What if your true gift is killing people? That is the premise of Jai-hong Juhn’s new movie Gifted (기프티드).
In this dark film, the South Korean director Juhn confesses that the plot was based on his own feeling of extreme fear of not being able to make another movie in the future, the pressure of having a stable and married life was slowing him down. With an extreme short budget of $34.000 in South Korea, he decided to let this fear go and produce something of his own.
In Gifted, after being laid off and denied for innumerous jobs, Minsoo (Beomjune Kim) gets dumped by his long-time girlfriend for being a “poor” man so he finds no other choice but to become a car thief. After accidentally killing a car owner, he discovers his own killer instinct... and he likes it.
For Minsoo, the outcome is quite amazing. He becomes an accomplished killer, praised by peers and economically set for months to come. Even his ex-girlfriend comes back to him begging for love and purses. *wink*
Gifted dabbles topics such as family, economical times in Korea and the pressure laid upon Asian men to provide at all times necessary, and what are the lengths people would go to give a stable (sometimes very superficial) life for those who they love.
